DJI Osmo Pocket 4 Review: The Ultimate Travel Camera?

Introduction

Packing for a family vacation always involves some tough choices, especially when it comes to camera gear. You want high quality memories, but you also do not want to lug around a massive camera rig while wrangling kids. On our recent family trip to Lake Erie and Niagara Falls, I decided to leave the bulky gear behind and test out the DJI Osmo Pocket 4. As my first pocket gimbal, I wanted to see if this compact device could truly rival a flagship smartphone and survive the rigors of travel. Spoiler alert: it is an absolute powerhouse, but there are a few quirks you should know about before deciding to pick one up.

The Pros and Cons

What Works (The Pros)

  • Form Factor and Discretion: It is incredibly lightweight and easy to manage. If you feel embarrassed recording with a massive setup in public, this tiny device takes that mental pressure away. Plus, it starts capturing footage in seconds just by flipping the screen.

  • Superior Video Quality: Thanks to the massive sensor and true mechanical stabilization, it easily beats a smartphone's digital cropping. You get beautiful depth, true color, and buttery smooth footage.

  • Saves Your Smartphone: Using a dedicated device keeps your phone safely tucked away in your pocket. You save your battery, prevent overheating, and free up your phone storage for other things.

  • Massive Internal Storage: Having 107 gigabytes built directly into the camera is a huge win. If you forget your memory card at the hotel or run out of space mid trip, you have a massive safety net ready to go.

  • Reliable Tracking and Battery: The new ActiveTrack flawlessly followed my son around trees and tracked vehicles from impressive distances. The battery is also stellar, lasting through hours of outdoor recording in direct sunlight without a single overheating warning.

What Needs Work (The Cons)

  • Lacking Standard Accessories: DJI completely cheaped out on the standard combo. It lacks a hard shell case or a basic tripod, leaving you with a flimsy bag that offers no real protection. You will definitely need to buy third party accessories to keep the camera safe.

  • Frame Rate Limits: While you can shoot at 240 frames per second for incredible slow motion, flat color grading is surprisingly missing at 120 and 240 fps.

  • Restricted Aspect Ratios: The flexible 4x3 and 1x1 video aspect ratios have been removed. You are locked into standard 16x9 widescreen or a 9x16 vertical mode, and that vertical mode caps out at 3K resolution.

  • Availability Issues: Due to current bans on DJI products in the United States, finding one means navigating third party sellers. This can lead to paying a higher premium and requires extra caution to avoid scams.

Final Verdict

The DJI Osmo Pocket 4 is a surprisingly capable device that packs cinematic quality into a shockingly small footprint. Whether you are capturing everyday family moments or documenting a major trip, it delivers incredible stabilization and dynamic range without weighing you down. Despite a disappointing standard accessory bundle and some minor frame rate limitations, the raw performance and sheer convenience make it a stellar addition to any travel bag. If you want top tier video without the heavy lifting, this is the tool to get the job done.
